Singapore's DBS cuts 900 jobs, reports 38 percent fall in Q3 profit

SINGAPORE, Nov 7, 2008 (AFP) - Singapore's DBS Group, Southeast Asia's biggest bank by assets, said Friday it was cutting 900 staff to trim costs amid the global credit crisis, and reported a slump in third quarter net profit.

Chief executive Richard Stanley said most of the cuts, to be carried out at the end of the month, will come from its offices in Singapore and Hong Kong and will account for six percent of the workforce.

"To be a streamlined organisation, I believe we must run a tighter ship," he told reporters.

"We have been vigilant on costs but as the economy enters a more difficult and uncertain phase, many financial institutions around the world and in Asia have made headcount reductions," he added.

"To be more productive and efficient, we will restructure and streamline the organisation. Regrettably, this has resulted in the need to reduce our workforce by six percent or about 900 people, primarily (in) Singapore and Hong Kong, by the end of the month."

ELF products

Recently purchased cosmetic products from ELF spree. It is very very cheap, cost only USD 1.00 for most stuff such as lip stick, eye shadow, eye brightener, compact powder..etc.

A local cosmetic sales chain has brought in this brand into Singapore as well but the prices are much more expensive. For the same USD 1.00 item, they are selling at SGD 6.90. Using today's exchange rate at 1.51 and including shipping cost (total to be about SGD 2.00) , that is a markup of whopping 3.45 times!

For people like me with no time to go shopping in Orchard Road, online shopping definitely saves my time and money.

My Baby

Aiden has been down with fever, flu, running nose and cough since wednesday.. He is finally almost well (except cough) now. Been so busy caring for him, I didn't have time to update my blog. Well, Aiden is still more important.

We have concluded it might be due to the herbal soup that he drank last Sunday to have caused him to be sick. His body is of "heaty" type, therefore, heaty herbal soup will bring out the heat from his body and make him sick.

Lesson learned, I am definitely not going to let him drink this anymore. All the effort to cool his body by making him drink lots of water and eat lots of fruits has gone down the drain.

My phone

I love my iPhone more and more.. I have started to download / transfer songs and games to my phone and I'm glad that I can do it in a breeze. Now I won't feel bored on the MRT trips.

Bought a red leather casing from epic centre at the price of S$49..kind of heartache, but I know myself too well.. if I don't start protecting the phone, soon there will be scratches everywhere...

I have also started to write notes in my phone to remind myself of everything that needs to be remembered.

However, there is one thing that I have not tried. WIFI... been wanting to take a break at starbucks and use the Wireless@SG but I simply have no time..

Weekend is coming!! Hooray!

Weekends are the most joyful time as it means relaxation, de-stress and shopping time! The most important thing is to be able to accompany my baby full saturday and full sunday.

Work Stress

This market downturn is a very nasty one, everyday we are surprised by the new "low" ... will the market recover soon? I don't know.

Work stress is unavoidable but I think its very tough to endure this kind of tensed environment for too long. Starting to feel lost again... Haiz...hope tomorrow is a better day...which I doubt so cos DJ has dropped again...

Online Gaming

One of the factor that bonds me and hubby is that we both love online gaming. No matter how busy we are with work and caring for our son, we could still set aside some time to play. His love is Conquer Online and he has been playing this game since Year 2005.

In fact, many of his friends are still in this game after so many years. Even though it is free to register and play this game, in order to be very "powerful" in the game, "dragonballs" can be purchased to enhance the weapons, clothes & accessories etc. I heard of some gamers spending tens of thousands to purchase bulks of "dragonballs" for upgrading of the character's weapons.

For me personally, I wouldn't spend so much in games. I rather use the money to buy shoes and bags! LOL. Gaming is a form of relaxation to release work stress and to make our lives more balanced.

Manuka Honey

I had a very painful sorethroat with multiple ulcers in August. An aunt advised that I should start drinking Manuka Honey as it will help to relieve sorethroats and prevent it as well. Of couse, I need to be discipline and drink a cup everyday in order to see the effect.

I went to a Watsons store and a sales assistant of the Manuka honey counter served me with great enthusiasm. I am confused over the grades of the honey and surprised to see the price as well. So I decided to do some googling before I decide which is best for me.

"UMF" is the name of a beneficial antibacterial found in some strains of manuka honey. It measures the antibacterial potency of the honey. Generally, the higher the level, the stronger antibacterial effect as well as the healing effect. Level 16 & above are considered the superior levels.

To summarize, the benefits of taking the manuka honey are:

1) Effective against sorethroat & ulcers

2) Clears infecting bacterias

3) Rehydrates the body

4) Prevents cold

5) Increase energy levels

Every night, I'll make myself a glass of honey water (one teaspoon with lukewarm water will do, hot water will kill the effect of honey). Prevention is better than cure. I seriously do not want to go through the painful experience again. Having ulcers at the back of the throat is no joke.

Short Trip

Planning for a short trip in November. Likely will be going to Genting~ City of Entertainment because my MIL has enough points to redeem for free hotel rooms. So, we need to budget for coach fares only and the exchange rate now is 1 SGD vs 2.4 MYR.

In order not to disrupt Aiden's sleeping pattern, we have decided to take the morning coach. It will be about time for hotel check-in when we arrive there. After check-in, we will start the packed activities in both the indoor and outdoor themeparks, enjoying our favourite bah kut teh (yum yum) and shop till you drop at the First World Plaza... woo hoo! really am looking forward to this trip!

My Love

Introducing my only son ~ aiden : )

He is 2.5 years old and besides my hubby, he is the most important person in my life.

Cheeky, mischevious and loves to sing & dance.. his presence has made our lives so joyful. Looking back when we are still hesitating whether to have babies or not.. this is definitely not a decision that we will regret. In fact, we regret not to plan to have this baby earlier!

His playgroup class will be ending in mid-Nov. I'm still wondering whether to enroll him into enrichment classes or to rest till next year...

iPhone

I have finally changed my lousy phone to iPhone! The look & feel is fantastic with on-screen keyboard and sensitive touch.

Messaging is cute as you could see the conversation clearly. However, one con is that you can't forward message with this phone. Though I don't forward messages frequently, it can pose a problem because i will need to re-type the message in order to send to another recipient.

The camera function that comes with 2 megapixel can take pictures effortlessly. The large screen makes the picture looks so good and sharp. When your friend is calling, his/her name is reflected in large font on the top and his/her face will splash onto the whole screen.

I have not try out the wifi function, shall try it tomorrow when having coffee in starbucks :P
